JSHPC Course Details and Dates

If you are a member of the Royal Navy or Royal Navy Reserve, you are eligible to attend a hang gliding or paragliding course for FREE as part of your Adventurous Training entitlement. Whether you want to learn how to fly a hang glider or paraglider you will have to pass two initial stages before you throw yourself off a hill.

Hang Gliding

The budding Hang Glider pilots will first attend a 12 day Elementary Pilot course. The course is designed for personnel who have no previous Hang Gliding experience. You will be taught basic Hang Gliding skills, which will encompass mainly taking off and landing. From day one you will be solo, however, your oppos and instructor will have you on stabilisers in the form of long tethers. You will also learn basic Air Laws and Codes of Good Piloting Practice. At the end of the course you will have gained the British Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association (BHPA) Hang Gliding Elementary Pilot Certificate (HEPC).

After the EPC course you can then go on to complete your Hang Gliding Club Pilot (HCP) course. The course is also 12 days long and is designed for personnel who have attained their HEPC qualification. Students will further develop their basic flying skills learning to turn, 360, soar and what the glider feels like when it stalls. By the end of the course you will throw yourself off a substantial hill and stay up for as long as you want. With these skills you will be ready to return to your local club and join in with people who regularly throw themselves off hills.

Paragliding

The budding Paragliding pilots will attend two courses of a similar format to the hang glider pilots. The Elementary Paragliding Course is again a 12-day course designed for personnel who have no previous paragliding experience. You will learn how to inflate a paraglider and how to handle this new gigantic kite as it flies above your head. Then you will go on to learn how to control and turn the glider once your feet leave the ground. The emphasis will be on how to take off and land safely. The Paragliding Elementary Pilot course will also teach you basic Air Law and Codes of Good Pilot Practice and at the end you will have gained the BHPA Paragliding Elementary Pilot Certificate (EPC).

Once you have gained the EPC you can then progress onto the Paragliding Club Pilot (PCP) level. The Paragliding Club Pilot course is 8-day days long and is designed for personnel who have previously attained their PEP qualification. On the course you will further develop you paragliding skills, you will learn different launching techniques, how to soar a ridge and how to recover from canopy deflations.

There are also advanced, club coach and instructor courses available for those who have gained Club Pilot certification and want to progress their flying further. For information on any of the courses available to service personnel look in the Defence Instruction Notice (DIN) 2005DIN06-108 Joint Service Adventurous Training Scheme Course Dates for Training Year 2006-2007.
